Julian Finney
Whilst we all dream about possible incomings, another one has quietly slipped out of the door...
In one of the least-surprising moves of the transfer window, Fraizer Campbell has left Sunderland and joined Cardiff City's Championship promotion push.
As is standard these days, the fee is 'undisclosed', though it has been suggested by the usual array of local journalists that it is just below the £1m mark.
The move brings to an end a tumultuous spell on Wearside for the former Manchester United striker which did, in fairness include some real highs such as a quite brilliant goal against Norwich, a special moment against Middlesbrough, and an England cap.
In truth, however, fate has not been kind of him. His time in the north east will be defined by injury and remembered as a case of 'what if?'.
We'd all obviously like to wish Campbell all the best for the future. There is definitely a good player in there somewhere.
From Sunderland's point of view, the assumption must be that a deal for a replacement striker is close. O'Neill has been at pains to stress the lack of numbers in the squad, so it is unlikely he'd have weakened his hand further without being on the verge of something materializing.
