Adam Johnson has withdrawn from the England squad with a 'minor' thigh injury.
The newly signed winger has made a bright start to life at the Stadium Of Light with two assists on his debut against Morecambe as well as putting in a decent showing against Swansea City at the weekend just gone.
The good news is that the injury has been described as a minor one, and the star will return back to Wearside tonight as opposed to jetting out to Chisinau with his teammates.
Johnson has already undergone a scan with the England squad, but as said, he'll return home for further assessment and treatment in order to be fit for our next game against Liverpool on September 15th.
While the injury has been described as minor, it still comes as a major worry for us as fans. Only this week on this very site we discussed the clubs strength in depth, and while the triumvirate of Johnson, Sessegnon and McClean is a good one, there's not much depth behind.
If Johnson can't get up to full fitness by the Liverpool game it's likely his spot will be filled by either Seb Larsson pushed into an advanced position or Fraizer Campbell - if we want to play the same way that is. There's also of course the option to go with two up front and move into a straight 4-4-2 formation.
That's something to worry about nearer the time though, for now we just wish Johnson a full and very speedy recovery from this injury.
