Not actually our pitch, but something close enough.
Bloody typical isn't it? Everyone bouncing upon the signings of Steven Fletcher and Adam Johnson plus the fact it's the first home game of the season and it's called off due to a waterlogged pitch just hours before kick off.
With the torrential rain prior to kick off flooding the pitch a decision had to be made by the referee and both side's managers. With more rain forecast for later, and the ball not rolling or bouncing, the sensible action was taken to postpone the game until another day.
Today's referee Neil Swarbrick said;
Both Martin and Brian were in agreement that the game should not go ahead.
Adding that it would have been "a farce" for the game to have gone ahead today in such horrendous circumstances. There has not been a date set yet for a rearranged fixture, but we do feel for the Reading fans who traveled up today, along with Sunderland fans who have traveled from all corners of the country.
On the plus side, Tuesday's Capital One Cup game against Morecambe could be a little bit more interesting. Plus of course Adam Johnson and Steven Fletcher should be well bedded into the side by the time we play Reading again.
Shame, but player safety is paramount. It's annoying we've been denied some action today, but the alternative could have lead to some serious injuries. Just one of them things.
Tickets bought for today's game will remain valid for the rearranged fixture.
