Our number one striker is Ghana's Asamoah Gyan - a fans favourite last year. So far this year however he has flattered to deceive, it may be too early to ascertain whether it is lack of match sharpness, a niggling injury or a general lack of interest following murmers of a move to a 'bigger' club. Personally I think when he is on his game he is good but I'm not convinced he is going to get us 20 goals a season like Bent did/does.
OK so we are 3 games into the season and already some of the fans are calling for the manager's head following consecutive defeats at the hands of our local rivals and Brighton in the Carling Cup. 1 goal in 3 games is rearing the question whether we need to invest in another striker so this article will look at what we currently have, what we are missing and who might be available in the marketplace.
Playing off Gyan is Sessegnon who really does look a class above the rest of our squad, the problem is he is not an out and out striker. He will run at people, impress with his flair and creativity, and he will not shy away from a shot but at the moment he is not gelling with Gyan up front.
In theory the pairing of Gyan and Sess could become a great threat and a goals scoring machine but on the evidence so far we are still some distance from that becoming a reality. The problem is, how long can we wait?
Our other great hope was Fraiser Campbell who has been dogged with injury since he joined us, missing most of last season and due to miss most of this. Will he ever be the same player we saw glimpses of before he took a ful-time membership on the physios massage table? Historically, players rarely are.
Last season we saw goals flying in from the Bent and Welbeck, with both now a distant memory we have been left a gaping hole for that non-nonsense finisher. Bent was never the greatest worker, missed more than his fair share of chances but biy does he know where the back of the net is and more importantly has a sixth sense to be in the right place at the right time to at least test the keeper. An experienced goal poacher is what we are missing now.
So Bruce has invested in youth when it comes to striker options wirth a big transfer fee on Wickham who appears to have huge potential but who has no expereince in the top level against top defenders. A gamble - probably a gamble worth taking but not an immediate answer as he will take time to find his feet and having not even been given a chance to show us what he's got in the cup game against Brighton you have to wonder when Bruce is going to give the kid a chance to shine.
Ji Dong Won has lloked a great prospect pre-season with a great work rate but again he is young, inexperienced at this level and throw into the equation the fact he can't speak English, again it is unlikely to see him banging them in for us in the next few months.
We also have Tounkara, Noble, Lynch and Cook as our young hopefuls in the reserves but let's be honest it's unlikely we are going to find our saviour amongst them this season (hopefully in the years to come).
Which leads us to ask who is out there that is a realistic target? Following is a list of players that have either fallen out with their respective clubs, are struggling to find first team playing time, have been linked with us already or may simply be available at the right price. So out of the following list if you could choose one striker to join us for the campaign (either on loan or permanent) then who would it be? For what it's worth I would love to see Daniel Sturridge join us - young, hungry, proven (Bolton last year and pre-season this) and an undoubted eye for goal. I can think of no better player to join us and get the goals we are so desperately short of.
You can of course guarantee that now I have written this article we will go out and bag a hatfull of goals this weekend against Swansea - so yes expect Gyan and Sess to bag a brace apiece and start off on a run of goal scoring the likes of which we've never seen before (well here's hoping anyway). Feel free to leave a coment with any other suggestions or if there are any of those listed you would definitely not want to see at our club (Zigic)?
